Shō Sugi Ban Lamp

Full function design study
This paper and wood lamp is a study in materiality, constructive playfulness, and design through experimentation. Inspiration came from several months of research at the Eames ranch in Marin County, California, especially through Ray Eames' papercrafts and graphic designs.
The solid base is constructed from a single cherry-wood block, hollowed out to house a flush-mounted LED bulb. Surface treatment for the base is a traditional Japanese wood preserving technique known as Shō Sugi Ban or Yakisugi, wherein open flame is applied until the wood is sealed with carbon, yielding interesting natural patterns. The shade atop this is common butcher paper, crumpled for character, then bonded using wheat paste. Concealed magnets securely join shade to base.
